You don't have to spend a day in the ocean to get those super hot, textured beach waves! All you need is a sea salt spray and voila! Check out our DIY recipe below to create your own custom spray at a fraction of the cost you would pay in the store!
Ingredients:
- 1 cup of hot water (not boiling)- I use a hot black tea base to help keep my hair dark in the sun, you can also use a chamomile tea base or add 1tsp of lemon or vodka to the water to lighten. A tea or lemon base will require refridgeration after.
- 2 tsp epsom salts
- 1/2 tsp Sea Salt or Himilayan Salt
- 1 tsp clear aloe vera gel - you can pick this up at almost any drugstore or Target or 1 tsp of your favorite hair gel- this gives it some stiffness & hold
- 1/2 tsp leave-in conditioner (I often use Infusium 23) or 1/2 tsp of coconut oil
- A basic 10oz spray bottle (you can pick this up at any drug store or beauty store)
- Optional: a few drops of essential oils, I love lavender, mint and citrus options
How to Make:
- Put the hot water or base in the spray bottle
- Add the epsom salts, sea salt, aloe vera, conditioner, & essential oil (if using)
- Add lemon juice/vodka if you are going to lighten using this method.
- Put the cap tightly on the bottle and shake for 1-2 minutes or until epsom salts and sea salt are dissolved.
- Store in the fridge if using lemon juice/vodka or tea base. Store at room temperature if you aren’t.
- Spray will keep 3-4 months.
- If you are using a bigger bottle, you can double this recipe.
How to Use:
Spray thoroughly through damp hair, scrunch & let air dry. You may want to scrunch using a towel to pull out any extra moisture and help the hair dry faster.
If your hair resists waves or is super thin spray throughly through damp hair at night until your hair is fairly saturated. Towel scrunch excess then secure in multiple loose braids. Let dry over night. Release the braids and lightly spritz again. Arrange as desired and add some style if desired. You will have waves that will hold up all day and that look, smell & feel like you've spent the day the beach.
