Hair Tool Kit for Spring 2013

"Have you ever wondered how to achieve the fabulous hair styles you see on the covers of magazines or that celebs sport constantly? Watched a so-called Youtube guide or read a Hot To article then thought, 'There is absolutely no way I could figure out how to do that?' This is why our founders created YouniqueU! As our Beauty Guru, I am tasked with breaking down these styles- to make it simple and have you looking like you stepped out of a magazine in no time! So get your teasing combs & wands ready!” -Brooke Allison, Beauty Guru
Every season I will compile the basics you will need for a good tool kit that will help you achieve all of our seasonal looks! Then follow my Coiffed’Out Video Blogs every Wednesday for step by step instructions on how to style these looks on yourself!

Here are the essentials you will need to achieve our Spring 2013 looks!

Hair Wand  Wands are a super easy way to achieve curls & this season's hot, rock star styled waves! I prefer a wand but if you have a curling iron you are comfortable with & don't want to make the additional  investment, you can wrap the hair around the barrel with the clamp down & use it practically the same way.

You can pick a wand up anywhere these days. Target, Wal-Mart, even your local pharmacy. Look for one with a 1 inch barrel. Try the Bed Head Curlipops 1" Styling Wand sold at Target for under $25.

Bands There are tons of different types out there. I keep a variety on hand because they are so inexpensive. Different looks can require different ones.

Gummy Elastics- you can pick these up anywhere and get a ton for under $2. These are great for braids or when using smaller portions of hair in a style.

Meta Grip Hooks- you can pick these up at Sally's Beauty supply for around $3 a pack. They are great for securing strategically placed ponytails or securing a large amount of hair that slips easily.

Ouchless Elastics- I think every woman out there already has a pack of basic elastics. You can pick up a pack for around $3.

Teasing Brush/Teasing Comb- A teasing brush or teasing comb is specifically designed to tease your hair. It has uneven bristles that force parts of the hair down creating stiffness & volume. You can tease your hair with a normal brush or comb but you will get more breakage & knotting after.

You can pick up a teasing brush like this at Sally's for under $4.

Hair Spray- Another basic staple most women already have. Make sure you invest just a little in your hair spray otherwise you will find yourself creating amazing hair that falls loose or flat in no time.

I always recommend Paul Mitchell products to my clients. If you don't have a good hairspray already check out one of my favorites. For hair that only needs a light hold try, Paul Mitchell Super Clean Light Hairspray, you can pick this up at Target for $16 or Paul Mitchell Hold Me Tight for a stronger hold also at Target for $17.

Or for a lower price point try Big Sexy Hair Spray & Play. You can also pick this up at Target for around $12.

Dry Wax- Dry wax has a number of uses for hair. You can apply it to dry styled hair to refine a look or to tousel up some waves, apply it to damp hair for texture and volume or as a basic finishing product.

I recommend Paul Mitchell FirmStyle Dry Wax, you can pick it up at local Paul Mitchell Salon or online at Amazon.com for around $20.

Or for a lower price point that is a tad bit lower try Short Sexy Hair Play Dirty Wax. This product comes in an easy to use spray & can grabbed in store or online at Ulta.

Bobby Pins- Bobby pins have a million uses in your hair and are an must in any hair tool kit!

If you don't already have a gazillion of these, you can pick up a pack anywhere for under $2.

Top 4 Tricks for Making Great Spring Hair!

"Spring with its varying elements & issues can be especially rough on your hair! Check out our tips for great hair all season long."

The Issue: Humidity
Spring’s sudden burst of warm humid weather can make even the fullest hair flat and resistant to your normal fabulous styling. No matter what texture your hair has naturally, this isn’t the season to force your lock into an unnatural style.

If your hair is curly, find a go to look that incorporates your curls. If your hair is straight but tends to curl up in humid weather, incorporate loose, light curls into your style. Pony tails and messy updo styles can be your best friend this time of year. Consider applying a humidity-resistant product like Big Sexy Hair Humidity Resistant Spray or Got2b Instant Tolerance Anti-Humidity Smoothing Spray to towel-dried hair for added humidity protection.

The Issue: Wind
Rough winds will shake the most perfectly coiffed hair around and create some massive flyaways! Windy gusts grab at split ends and create the static-y look, and damaged or naturally coarse hair has it worse because they have rougher hair cuticles, giving the breeze something to hold onto.

Windy times call for hair accessories: headbands, ponytails and clips are a must. Also try products specially formulated for blustery days like Redken Glass 01 Smoothing Serum which tames and smoothes unruly tresses while conditioning frazzled ends.

The Issue: Moisture
April showers bring more than May flowers – they also add constantly changing moisture levels in the air. The problem? Frizz is caused by hair trying to soak in moisture from the air, so chances are you’ll end up with a frizz problem at some point during springtime shifts in the weather.

Try leaving your blow dryer on the shelf and gently blot hair dry with a towel instead – but don’t rub. Rubbing hair dry can cause further breakage on already weak strands, increasing your chances of frizz. After you've towel-blotted, apply an anti-frizz serum like Sexy Straight Smooth & Seal Anti Frizz Spray to your damp hair and comb it through so the product is distributed evenly.

The Issue: Heat
Spring’s warming weather can be a cleverly disguised cause of hair havoc. Why? Hot air opens the hair cuticle, which leads to split ends, breakage, and duller hair color. Plus, most hair products make your head feel like an oil slick when exposed to hot weather.

Ever wonder why your hair dryer has a "cool setting", this is why! Try using it near the end of your blow out session. Cold air closes the hair cuticle and seals in the moisture. Also consider trying a weather-friendly product like CHI Pliable Polish - Weightless Styling Paste, a weightless styling paste hair serum that protects hair from the elements and helps you hold some style without leaving a greasy residue.
